SAMPARC Balgram, Bhaje, is a model residential child care project committed to the holistic development of orphaned, destitute, and socially marginalized girl children. At present, the centre provides shelter and comprehensive care to 125 girls within a structured and nurturing environment. The institution functions as a full-fledged Children’s Village, comprising 12 Balsadans, each designed to accommodate ten children. Every Balsadan is managed by a housemother who assumes the full responsibility of caregiving, ensuring the daily routine of the children is well-structured and consistent. From waking the children up in the morning to preparing them for school and monitoring their academic progress, hygiene, emotional needs, and overall well-being, the housemother plays a vital parental role in their upbringing.
The Children’s Home operates under the direct supervision of Mrs. Ratna Banerjee, Founder Trustee and Project Coordinator. She is supported by a multidisciplinary team that includes a project in charge, counsellor, social worker, tutors, sports instructor, and housemothers. Together, this team works toward providing a balanced and developmental environment for the children. The Bhaje centre is uniquely situated in a picturesque, green, and serene location, spread over four acres of land. The spacious and natural setting enhances the emotional and physical well-being of the children, making it an ideal place for their upbringing.
The infrastructure of the centre includes a community hall, a central kitchen-cum-dining hall, an administrative office, a library, a guest room, a counselling and meeting room, study spaces, a computer room, a medical centre, a playground, a basketball ground, a garden, and well-maintained staff quarters. These facilities are designed to support both the academic and extracurricular development of the children.
Children residing at the centre attend various educational institutions based on their age and academic level. The children attend Lily English Medium School & Junior College in Malavli and VPS School. In addition to formal schooling, the children receive after-school tutoring and special academic coaching in subjects such as English, mathematics, science, and computer skills.
Healthcare is a priority at SAMPARC Balgram. Regular medical checkups are conducted to ensure the well-being of all children. A part-time nurse visits the centre daily, and a doctor conducts routine visits to address the health concerns of the children. In case of emergencies or specialized treatment, children are referred to the SAMPARC Medical Centre in Malavli or the Saraswati Hospital in Lonavala.
In the area of physical education and recreational development, the children are trained in various sports and extracurricular activities. Regular sessions in outdoor and indoor games, physical training, and march past are part of their weekly routine. Artistic development is equally encouraged through regular activities such as music, drawing, and painting. Resource persons from diverse fields are invited to conduct workshops and sessions focused on life skills, value education, emotional resilience, and personality development. Programs such as Art of Living are also incorporated into the curriculum to promote mindfulness and self-awareness.
Capacity building of staff is an ongoing focus. Regular team discussions are held to assess the needs of the children and to refine the roles and responsibilities of caregivers. The objective is to build confidence and competence among staff members, enabling them to work more effectively with the children and to support each other as a cohesive team.
SAMPARC Balgram, Bhaje, therefore represents a comprehensive, community-integrated care model that prioritizes education, emotional and physical wellbeing, life skills, and a sense of family and community, empowering vulnerable girls to grow into confident and capable individuals.
Pooja’s father is absconding as the mother unable to look after her children. The financial condition of the family was very poor and the mother was unable to take care of her 2 children. So Pooja and her sister were admitted through Child Welfare Committee, Pune at SAMPARC children’s Home, Bhaje. She was just 9 years old when she joined SAMPARC.
Pooja along with her sister received good care, education and upbringing at SAMPARC. With proper guidance and support Pooja completed her GNM Graduation in Nursing Management.
At present Pooja is working at Talegaon General Hospital and is earning good. She is married, taking good care of her family and also has taken the responsibility of her younger sister who is staying with her and her younger sister is pursuing higher education.
135 Orphan, poor, needy girl children under rehabilitation program.
Children live in a family environment in Community setup since it started in 1990.
1100 children are rehabilitated 200 children already became self-reliant and live with dignity, 133 girls are married.
Today a total of 135 girl Children are sheltered at SAMPARC Children’s Home, Bhaje. The centre is a full-fledged Children’s Village with 10 Balsadans. Each Balsadan having 10 children with one housemother who takes complete care of the 10 children in her sadan (house), right from waking up to sending them to school, taking care of their complete daily routine, monitoring the children’s need and ensuring that the children are healthy and happy.
The Children’s Home is working under the guidance of Mrs.Ratna Banerjee, Founder Trustee and coordinator of the Project along with Project In-charge, Counselor, Social Worker, housemothers, tutors and sports instructor who work for the children.
The centre is unique for its picturesque location, a pleasant environment & with lot of greenery around makes it an ideal place for the children to live in a spacious area covering 4 acres of land. The centre has good facilities like community hall, central kitchen-cum-dining hall, office, library, guest room, counseling-cum-meeting room, study room, library, computer room, medical centre, playground, basketball ground, garden and staff quarters.
The primary children attend the Zilla Parishad School, the secondary and the high school students attend the VPS School, some children also attend the Abhinav & Lily English medium schools at Malavli. Children pursuing 11th & 12th std attend Lily Junior College.
Medical checkup of the children is conducted regularly to ensure the wellbeing of all children. A part time nurse daily visits the centre and a doctor visits the centre to look after the health needs of the children. In case of emergency the children are taken to SAMPARC Medical Centre, Malavli or to Saraswati Hospital Lonavla.
Apart from regular tutoring for studies after attending school special coaching program is provided to the children in Spoken English, Math, Science, General Knowledge, Reasoning and Computers.
Children are given training in Sports -outdoor and indoor along with extracurricular activities. They do march past, P.T. and also receive training in Wrestling.
All working members of the centre regularly do detail discussion about the need of the children, role of staff based on the approach of capacity building. Much emphasis is given on how staff can improve confidence of the children and their colleagues to do the same work. Resource persons are regularly invited to the centre for developing Art of Living, life skill, value education etc. Activities like music, drawing, and painting are the regular activities of the centre.
Bhaje centre is run under the guidance of Local Level Managing Committee. The purpose of setting Local Level Managing Committee is to get local personnel/citizen to participate in SAMPARC social work and to take care of the management and overall care of the children. Each SAMPARC LLMC functions for a period of 3 years.
